Assignment instructions: (Taking into consideration I am a swimming instructor)
The purpose of this assignment is to share knowledge of adult education practices (for example, any of the “practices” we have studied so far such as Peer Mentoring, Action-Learning, CoP, Discussions, etc.) in the workplace. By sharing the different existing AE practices, (this means it should already exist in your workplace. Not what you would like to see happen, but what is happening now) it allows us to ask questions, compare practices and gain insights into how learning takes place at work. This will be done in small discussion groups of 3-5 people.
What are we doing?
This assignment has 3 requirements:
Presentation: Each student will create a presentation summary of 1-2 adult education practices in their workplace (or past workplace) to present to their group.
Discussion Facilitation: Create a prompting question and facilitate an on-going discussion with your peers about your presentation.
Discussion Engagement: You will view each group member’s presentation and engage in their forum discussion about their presentation.
How am I doing it?
Presentation:
Describe an adult education practice at your workplace This does NOT have to be something we already learned about, nor does it have to be the most effective AE practice. You can use seminars, peer-presented seminars, workshops, outside corporate training or specialist training, going to a conference, asynchronous or synchronous modules or courses, unfacilitated online learning (such as the onboarding training for WSIB, WHMIS, workplace harassment, etc.) or any other way that learning happens at your workplace (the good, the bad, and the ugly!)
BE SPECIFIC:
Tell us what training is provided, who is involved, when, how often, who coordinates/facilitates it, the purpose, etc.
Give us some details, perhaps use the last training you had as an example.
Do NOT make vague statements such as “we have discussions” or “we mentor each other” without elaborating on it (see above point)
Using the course content, compare it to one of the practices that we have studied
It may not completely align to one of the practices that we have studied, but parts of it will. It it resembles a little of this one, and a little of that one, tell us.
If it does not resemble any AE Practices that we learned, explain what is missing – compare it to something close and describe the differences and similarities
BE SPECIFIC – use the course content to support your statements, descriptions, and comparisons.
What are the key issues/obstacles & successes in this AE practice at your workplace?
Is it an effective AE practice? Why or why not? What could go wrong? What is working? Stay away from a long list of benefits of “could be”
What are some potential future issues with this practice?
What might go wrong in future or is likely to? Why? (For example: [relevant to post-secondary, not workplace] – Ai changed everything in university and college. For the better or worse?
REMEMBER: AT THIS POINT YOU AREN’T TALKING ABOUT WHAT WOULD BE BETTER OR WHAT YOUR WORKPLACE REALLY NEEDS – that is the final assignment. Stick with what is already happening in your workplace.
Correct and accurate APA citations and references
If it isn’t your idea, thought, model, theory, etc., than you need to cite it.
If it’s cited, it needs to be in your references, if it’s in your references, it needs to cited in your paper.
Check the inserted feedback comments in your previous assignment for notes about APA.
WHERE TO PUT CITATIONS?: Put citations in the text as per normal or at the bottom of each slide if you are talking more than you have written. (If spoken you will still need to cite your sources as per normal). References can go on the last slide.
You may use PPT or video (mp4 format) (I cannot open a .mov format)
Approximately 8-10 slides
BE CONCISE: Being concise is a very good skill to learn. Continually ask yourself: Is this relevant? Have I mentioned this previously? Am I giving too much background information that isn’t needed? Have I organized my work so it’s not repetitive (using headings)?
Be creative! Do not just do “Death by PPT” – slides just full of text – ugh!
If you do a voice over or video – no longer than 10 minutes
Alternative format? Ask Karen, she’ll likely say yes!
Discussion Facilitation:
Create a lively open-ended discussion prompt question that provokes critical thought
To create a good discussion question – draw on what you have learned from Week 3: Leading Effective Discussions and Week 5: Action-Science and Critical Thinking
Avoid using questions with an obvious or yes/no answer.
Facilitate the discussion without overwhelming it, answer questions posed by peers.
